IV. NEW BUSINESS
- “AT&T/Get Wireless Now” Design Review & Wall Sign
80 Main Street, Map 37/Lot 59
Central Business B-1 District
Applicant: Hunt Newton Agent: Ted & Linda Marsh
This is an application for the installation of one 5.0’(h) x 44.0’(w) wall sign.
Presenting on behalf of this application was John Brodzinski, representing the Applicant. Also present were Ted and Linda Marsh, Hunt Newton and and Carol J. Newton, Vice President of at&t Get Wireless Now.
An at&t retail space is proposed for the vacant space located at 80 Main Street. The siding of this retail space will be an earthone, autumn tan in color and an overhang and a standing seam metal roof will be installed. The outside trim will be in white. A 4’6” x 6’ window is proposed to be installed on a 40’ wall, situated at the corner of the building, closest to the Saybrook dentist’s office, 2 feet from the building, with a total dimension from the corner of the building of 8 feet. The elevation will match from front to rear.
An 8-10 foot hedgerow will be installed at the edge of the building, adjacent to Liberty Bank and continues to the rear of the property.
Mr. Brodzinski stated that the Liberty Bank employees currently utilize 4 parking spaces. The applicant proposes a parking plan which will accommodate 36 spots, including 5 spaces which are situated in the front of the building. Liberty Bank personnel will utilize 4-5 of the parking spaces.
The proposed at&t sign will be a channel-lit LED, with letters that are cross-hatch black with back lit alumination. The sign will encompass 34-35 square feet of the 220 square foot existing wall. The back wall will be fabricated from hearty panel, painted in the autumn tan. The area of the building on which the sign will be mounted will be built out to 12 or 14 inches which will broaden the corner of the building. Members suggested installation of crown molding on the cornice at the top of parapet wall. Mr. Brodzinski stated that the proposed style of back lit, channel lettered lighting, offers a very soft illumination. The lighting mounted under the soffet will be recessed, downlit LED soft lighting.
The panels on the 10 foot windows will be banded with an historic sill, shadowed with a 5/8” x ¾” panel bead molding.
Ms. Missel commented on the color choice of “envigorating orange” which will be utilized for the standing sea metal roof awning over the front of the store. There is currently a weather wood shingle in place.
Members stated that the “envirogating orange” color is not in keeping with the businesses on Main Street. After review of a color chart, members and the applicant agreed that the overhang roof will be painted in an Iron Gray with a matte finish. It will be clear coated to insure against the elements.
Ms. Missel suggested the installation of grids in the windows. Mr Brodzinski presented a photo of transom style windows which are installed across the top portion of the windows, however it was decided to accept the window proposal as presented.
Mr. Brodzinski stated that the lighting for the signs are on timers and the store closes anywhere from 7-9pm. The sign proposed to be located on the side of the building will be placed on a timer to shut off earlier. The applicant will check with the Zoning Enforcement Officer to determine if the side illuminated sign will be an issue for the neighbors.
Members agreed that the landscaping plan is in keeping with the design review.
MOTION to recommend approval of “AT&T/Get Wireless Now” Design Review & Wall Sign, 80 Main Street, Map 37 / Lot 59 with the following changes: 1) The side of the building will be painted autumn tan to match the entire building. 2) The standing seam, metal roof will be painted Iron Gray and crown molding will be added to the cornice on the top of the parapet wall. 3) The cornice and crown molding will be extended around the corner to the new depth of the parapet wall. 4) The top of the entry door assembly will be a 1” x 10” PVC trim board with crown molding above. 5) The raised panel located just below the front two groups of windows will be divided into 3 sections, in line with the actual panes of the windows and the panel below the side window will be
cut in two sections. 6) A 4’6” x 6’ wide window will be installed on the side of the building and a second 1’4” by 4’1” wide, 5.72 square foot LED back-lit at&t sign which will be identicle to the proposed sign, will be placed on the side of the building, above the window, remaining within the 5% requirement; MADE by T. Brodeur; SECONDED by S. Missel; APPROVED by S. Missel, T. Brodeur, B. D’Agostino; ABSTAINING: None; (3-0-0).
